Hallo lieber Gast

Christmas Thoughts - Holiday Traditions

.

I wish we could put up some of the Christmas spirits in jars and open a jar of it every month.

- Harlan Miller

The Advent wreath with four lights, for each Sunday before Christmas, a light more, is an important part of German Christmas. Traditional families gather around the wreath on each Advent Sunday to light the next candle and sing Christmas carols. This was even more important in the past when the Christmas tree was usually reserved for a special unveiling only on Christmas Eve. Until then, the Advent wreath provided the evergreen look and aroma in the house.

Ich wünsche Euch eine wunderschöne, harmonische Adventszeit.

herzlichst Isabella

 “Beach Rules:
Soak up the sun.
Ride the waves.
Breathe the salty air.
Feel the breeze.
Build sandcastles.
Rest, relax, reflect.
Collect seashells.
Bare-feet required.”

I miss the sea very much this year. But the real risk is too high. The images above are taken in 2018 during a short break at St. Peter-Ording, North Sea.

Happy 244th Birthday, America! Stay Healthy! Stay Secure!

It goes without saying that 2020 will be remembered as a historic year. The global COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact our daily lives, including our canceled plans for traveling and see our friends in the USA again. Despite celebrations being vastly different from years past, it's important that you dear friends, don't forget the true meaning of Independence Day. July 02, 2020.

Happy 244th Birthday, America! Stay Healthy! Stay Secure!

America will once again be seen
as the last best hope of earth.”

And I'm sure, we see us all again!!

#stayathome - Summer 2020

.

What is one to say about June, the time of perfect young summer, the fulfillment of the promise of the earlier months, and with as yet no sign to remind one that its fresh young beauty will ever fade.

- Gertrude Jekyll

June is the best month to enjoy all this work done at our garden, all the roses (and there are a lot of roses at our garden) are in full bloom - every year again it's absolutely breathtaking and I feel so blessed for this chance in life to plan a garden by myself and to enjoy all its ups and downs. Our cottage garden is now 18 years old and looks exactly like in my dreams. And painting outside, inspired by all these lovely flowers around me is overwhelming and one of my favorite activities during these long days and lightful summer evenings.

June - the Strawberry Month

.

My Strawberry

O marvel, fruit of fruits, I pause
To reckon thee. I ask what cause
Set free so much of red from heats
At core of earth, and mixed such sweets

With sour and spice: what was that strength
Which out of darkness, length by length,
Spun all thy shining thread of vine,
Netting the fields in bond as thine.

I see thy tendrils drink by sips
From grass and clover's smiling lips;
I hear thy roots dig down for wells,
Tapping the meadow's hidden cells.

Whole generations of green things,
Descended from long lines of springs,
I see make room for thee to bide
A quiet comrade by their side;

I see the creeping peoples go
Mysterious journeys to and fro,
Treading to right and left of thee,
Doing thee homage wonderingly.

I see the wild bees as they fare,
Thy cups of honey drink, but spare.
I mark thee bathe and bathe again
In sweet unclaendared spring rain.

I watch how all May has of sun
Makes haste to have thy ripeness done,
While all her nights let dews escape
To set and cool thy perfect shape.

Ah, fruit of fruits, no more I pause
To dream and seek thy hidden laws!
I stretch my hand and dare to taste,
In instant of delicious waste

On single feast, all things that went
To make the empire thou hast spent

Helen Hunt

Each day eating fresh-picked strawberries is like living in heaven! I love June so very much, the garden is in full bloom, all roses are open. The scent is overwhelming and then the strawberries! We have a lot of strawberries farmers around us and so one MUST buy these delicious fruits.

There are so many receipts I had to try. This year I have done a strawberry tiramisu for the first time, with mascarpone, yogurt, biscuits marinated with Kirschwasser and strawberry sauce and pieces - unbelievable yummy!! And of course strawberry milkshake, and a cold yogurt-soup and homemade strawberry ice cream and and ...

Mein Norden - Das Reisen

.

Das Reisen ist auch solch ein Element, das sich jeder Definition entzieht.
Wie schnell ist man weit vom gestrigen Tag...

Hugo von Hofmannsthal

My longing for the sea is immense, but this year it's a no-go for us. The impressions are a wonderful memory to the Island Juist, Northsea - Germany. It's a small lovely place without any cars, only horse-drawn carriage, endless beach, wide-open sky, and even in the high season space enough to breathe.

An den Flieder

Flieder, blühst du,
stillt sich die Sehnsucht, –
lösest ganz leise die Flügel der Seele,
lähmst durch ein wonnig-weiches Ermüden
die vor Erwartung erregten Gedanken,
wandelnd Lust und Leid in lauter
blühendes, liebendes All-Empfinden.

Mai Wunsch

Mai-Wunsch

Wie lieblich hat sichs eingemait!
Die Erde schwimmt in Blüten.
Das ist die höchst willkommne Zeit,
Die alles will begüten.

Amen! Es sei!

Otto Julius Bierbaum, 1865 - 1910

Southern Corners 13 - Lighthouse of Cavalleria

.

Lighthouse of Cavalleria

The northernmost of the lighthouses of Menorca was inaugurated in 1857 to reduce more than 700 ship accidents that had happened on its shores since the fourteenth century. The white tower is located more than 90 meters above sea level, that’s why this lighthouse is surrounded by spectacular cliffs and is an excellent spot to enjoy the best panoramas of the entire north coast.

It is the only one that has an interpretation center. Without a doubt, the best part is its incredible sunsets, which have become very fashionable lately. We visit this wonderful place in the preseason in May 2018 and as you see, there are only a few people enjoying the spectacular scenery.

Zwei Osterhäschen in Zeiten von Social Distancing

.

My North - A March Glee

.

A March Glee

I hear the wild geese honking
From out the misty night,—
A sound of moving armies
On-sweeping in their might;
The river ice is drifting
Beneath their northward flight.

I hear the bluebird plaintive
From out the morning sky,
Or see his wings a-twinkle
That with the azure vie;
No other bird more welcome,
No more prophetic cry.

I hear the sparrow's ditty
Anear my study door;
A simple song of gladness
That winter days are o'er
My heart is singing with him,
I love him more and more.

I hear the starling fluting
His liquid "O-ka-lee;"
I hear the downy drumming,
His vernal reveillé;
From out the maple orchard
The nuthatch calls to me.

Oh, spring is surely coming.
Her couriers fill the air;
Each morn are new arrivals,
Each night her ways prepare;
I scent her fragrant garments,
Her foot is on the stair.

Der Garten erwacht

Frühling übers Jahr

Das Beet, schon lockert
Sich's in die Höh',
Da wanken Glöckchen
So weiß wie Schnee;
Safran entfaltet
Gewalt'ge Glut,
Smaragden keimt es
und keimt wie Blut.

Primeln stolzieren
So naseweis,
Schalkhafte Veilchen,
Versteckt mit Fleiß;
Was auch noch alles
Da regt und webt,
Genug, der Frühling
Er wirkt und lebt.

Offenbarung

.

Offenbarung

Natur spricht laut in Wort und Schrift
Du mußt nur Windeswehen
Und Duft und Klang und Wald und Trift
Und Fels und Meer verstehen!

Ein jeder Baum, der braust in Wettern,
Und jede Blume auf der Flur,
Und jeder Zweig ist voll von Blättern
Der Offenbarung der Natur.

Auf jedem Blatt steht licht und offen:
"O glaub' an helle Frühlingsluft!"
Auf jedem Blatt steht grünes Hoffen,
Still flüsternd um die Blumenbrust.

Auf jedem Blatt steht groß geschrieben:
"Der Geist der Lieb' durchweht die Flur!"
Auf jedem Blatt steht: "Lieben! lieben!"
Als Offenbarung der Natur.

Declaration - Chicago

.

Declaration

BY PHILLIP B. WILLIAMS

City of wind and glass dressed in frozen lace,
of the wide-stone tower that would not burn,
of Lake Michigan and the poor who never
see the sun drop lines of light across the cold ache
of water, of televised faces spitting water on children
in a park obliterated of its pigeons. City of pigeons
on train platforms where trains say the names
of approaching destinations like prophets: you know
me as your restless child. I creep through dimensions
of snow-scythed wind and ruthless summers
looking for my semblance in neighborhoods
gentrified into dull disasters of coffee and scones.
I have loved you like darkness loves the base
of a throat yet songs I could sing for you
won’t come. City of Lou Malnati’s and Giordano’s,
of segregation and gang wars, of bus drivers
who seem to hate me and so I hate them back,
the blade of their impatience, the phantom dark
beneath their abrasive eyes, until I meet the one
who says “good morning” back and it sounds
like “I love you” and “I’m sorry” and I needed
to hear that this morning because traffic’s slow
as a corroded vein and the Red Line changes
races halfway through and that feels wrong
and beyond explanation like the parking meters
eating our tired bodies down to their good bones.
At night, Michigan Ave. slips on its suit of lights
and tourists while Madison and Central Park
roll restless with Shark’s fried fish and barbershops
where a boy sits with the buzz of clippers
carving something beautiful from the black curls
on his head. You’ve been on my mind, City
of African music festivals and Bud Billiken
parades, City of name changes I refuse to honor.
Sears to Willis, the ghost of a Marshall Field’s relief
oxidized into obscurity. Here is my face, City.
Here is my face and my hands are open for you.
Here is the body that has rejected your violence,
that has been missed by your bullets, City.
Here is the scimitar of my tongue to cut you
down to your particulars, in hope to find
something in you to love that will love me back.

Donau Schiffsmühle, Gifhorn - Danube Boat Mill

.

The Old Mill

Here from the brow of the hill I look,
Through a lattice of boughs and leaves,
On the old gray mill with its gambrel roof,
And the moss on its rotting eaves.
I hear the clatter that jars its walls,
    And the rushing water’s sound,
And I see the black floats rise and fall
As the wheel goes slowly round.

I rode there often when I was young,
With my grist on the horse before,
And talked with Nelly, the miller’s girl,
    As I waited my turn at the door;
And while she tossed her ringlets brown,
And flirted and chatted so free,
The wheel might stop or the wheel might go,
It was all the same to me.

’T is twenty years since last I stood
On the spot where I stand to-day,
And Nelly is wed, and the miller is dead,
And the mill and I are gray.
But both, till we fall into ruin and wreck,
    To our fortune of toil are bound;
And the man goes, and the stream flows,
And the wheel moves slowly round.

by Thomas Dunn English, 1819 - 1902
