Hallo lieber Gast

Mein Norden: Steinhuder Meer - Lake Steinhude

 .

When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy.

  – Rumi

The Steinhuder Meer or Lake Steinhude is a lake in Lower Saxony, Germany located 30 kilometers (19 mi) northwest of Hanover. It is named after the nearby village of Steinhude.

It is part of the glacial landscape formed after the recession of the glaciers of the latest Ice Age, the Weichselian glaciation. There are two theories regarding how the lake of Steinhude was formed. One of them says that glaciers gouged out the hole and meltwater filled it. The other theory states that an ice storm formed the hole and as the groundwater rose, the lake was created. In its middle, there is a small artificial island carrying an 18th-century fortification, the Wilhelmstein. Today the lake is the heart of a nature reserve, the Steinhuder Meer Nature Park, and is also used as a recreational area.

A short visit to this wonderful place and a nice walk along the lakeside is one of these things that gives to me the necessary healing for my travel longing soul and the hopeful mood I need.

"Historical Wooden Boats "Auswanderer"

For a nostalgic trip take a ride in one of our historic wooden boats called Auswanderer. These traditional boats, powered by wind or motor, carry 20 to 30 passengers. The name Auswanderer sounds somewhat like wanderlust and means emigrant. The unusual name is fitting, for until 1866 Lake Steinhuder Meer served as a border. The north and east coast were a part of the Kingdom of Hanover, while the southwest belonged to the Principality of Schaumburg-Lippe. If you went from one shore to the other, you actually emigrated.
Our guests can also book the wooden boats for round trips and individual tours. For a particularly special day, you can combine a trip on the boat with your bike tour or hike."

  3. Greetings and Salutations! Ahhhh.....hopeful mood. YES. I am anticipating seeing the morning sun rise and set while having a cup of coffee down at the lake. I'm ready to travel. Breathe in the lake air. Hear the trees in the wind. Let the world STOP for awhile. Looking at your photographs of the wooden boats makes me long for the summer home. And so it is.
