Hallo lieber Gast

Ernst Stadler, 1883 - 1914

My North - Aller Wehr at Celle

 .

North of the old town of Celle, the Aller forks into two arms and there has been a weir system with a water mill at this point since the Middle Ages. The goods transported by water were transshipped around the weir and the river as an official federal waterway ends here today.

The Allerwehr is very picturesque with its historical machine house and the mansion mill: the water of the river plunges several meters down the two steps of the bulwark, which is now a listed building.

Darum

Darum

Was freut dich so?

So herzlich gedrückt. Wer will es sagen?
Warum? Darum! Nun laß dein Fragen.

“While there is perhaps a province in which the photograph can tell us nothing more than what we see with our own eyes, there is another in which it proves to us how little our eyes permit us to see.”

If you have eyes and a heart for enjoying the small wonderful moments around us there's always a day like this. Crispy cold walk along the river Elbe at Hitzacker. Nature is sleeping and the old river is going on and on.

“If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.”

– Anne Bradstreet

and so I welcome winter's comeback this morning with the unexpected "view out of my window". This is the start of new series here at my photo-blog and I hope you enjoy it.

Bleiben - mein Norden

Wintermärchen

Auf dem Baum vor meinem Fenster
Saß im rauhen Winterhauch
Eine Drossel, und ich fragte:
»Warum wanderst du nicht auch?

Warum bleibst du, wenn die Stürme
Brausen über Flur und Feld,
Da dir winkt im fernen Süden
Eine sonnenschöne Welt?«

Antwort gab sie leisen Tones:
»Weil ich nicht wie andre bin,
die mit Zeiten und Geschicken
Wechseln ihren leichten Sinn.

Die da wandern nach der Sonne
Ruhelos von Land zu Land,
Haben nie das stille Leuchten
In der eignen Brust gekannt.

Mir erglüht's mit ew'gem Strahle
– Ob auch Nacht auf Erden zieht –,
sing' ich unter Flockenschauern
Einsam ein erträumtes Lied.

Wundersamer Trost der Schmerzen!
Doch nur jene kennen ihn,
Die in Nacht und Sturm beharren
Und vor keinem Winter fliehn.

Dir auch leuchtet hell das Auge;
Deine Wange zwar ist bleich;
Doch es schaut der Blick nach innen
In das ew'ge Sonnenreich.

Laß uns hier gemeinsam wohnen,
Und ein Lied von Zeit zu Zeit
Singen wir von dürrem Aste
Jenem Glanz der Ewigkeit.

Otto Ernst, 1862 - 1926

---*---

Enjoy the last days of this strange year wherever you can. I would like to thank each and every one of you for all your loyalty, attention, and care over the past 12 years here in my photo and poetry blog. I can hardly believe the number myself and it has become my home and memory but above all the beginning of many great friendships.

I sincerely wish you a good start into a positive 2021

Ever yours,

Isabella

The Mind of Winter - My North

.

One must have a mind of winter
To regard the frost and the boughs
Of the pine-trees crusted with snow;

And have been cold a long time
To behold the junipers shagged with ice,
The spruces rough in the distant glitter

Of the January sun; and not to think
Of any misery in the sound of the wind,
In the sound of a few leaves,

Which is the sound of the land
Full of the same wind
That is blowing in the same bare place

For the listener, who listens in the snow,
And, nothing himself, beholds
Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is.

Wallace Stevens - 1954

Die Christrose - Christmas Thoughts

.

Die Christrose

In der schweigenden Welt,
Die der Winter umfangen hält,
Hebt sie einsam ihr weißes Haupt;
Selber geht sie dahin und schwindet
Eh’ der Lenz kommt und sie findet,
Aber sie hat ihn doch verkündet,
Als noch keiner an ihn geglaubt.

Johannes Trojan (1837 - 1915)

Christmas Thoughts - Holiday Traditions

.

I wish we could put up some of the Christmas spirits in jars and open a jar of it every month.

- Harlan Miller

The Advent wreath with four lights, for each Sunday before Christmas, a light more, is an important part of German Christmas. Traditional families gather around the wreath on each Advent Sunday to light the next candle and sing Christmas carols. This was even more important in the past when the Christmas tree was usually reserved for a special unveiling only on Christmas Eve. Until then, the Advent wreath provided the evergreen look and aroma in the house.

Ich wünsche Euch eine wunderschöne, harmonische Adventszeit.

herzlichst Isabella

My North - and then...

“...and then, I have nature and art and poetry, and if that is not enough, what is enough?”

― Vincent Willem van Gogh

We have discovered this magical place on our last day trip into the Harz Mountains region nearby. These photos are taken with my iPhone and the Hipstamatic App and I love how it shows the fairytale mood at this place and hope you like it too.

Mein Norden - August See

.

Grete Gulbransson 1882 - 1934

Blume sein mit Rilke!

.

Weiß die Natur noch den Ruck,
Da sich ein Teil der Geschöpfe
Abriß vom stetigen Stand?
Blumen, geduldig genug,
Hoben nur horchend die Köpfe,
Blieben im Boden gebannt.

Weil sie verzichteten auf
Gang und gewillte Bewegung,
Stehn sie so reich und so rein.
Ihren tiefinneren Lauf,
Voll von entzückter Erregung,
Holt kein Jagender ein.

Innere Wege zu tun
An der gebotenen Stelle,
Ist es nicht menschliches Los?
Anderes drängt den Taifun,
Anderes wächst mit der Welle, –
Uns sei Blume-sein groß.

Rainer Maria Rilke, 1875 - 1926

Happy 244th Birthday, America! Stay Healthy! Stay Secure!

It goes without saying that 2020 will be remembered as a historic year. The global COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact our daily lives, including our canceled plans for traveling and see our friends in the USA again. Despite celebrations being vastly different from years past, it's important that you dear friends, don't forget the true meaning of Independence Day. July 02, 2020.

Happy 244th Birthday, America! Stay Healthy! Stay Secure!

America will once again be seen
as the last best hope of earth.”

—Abraham Lincoln

And I'm sure, we see us all again!!

#stayathome - Summer 2020

What is one to say about June, the time of perfect young summer, the fulfillment of the promise of the earlier months, and with as yet no sign to remind one that its fresh young beauty will ever fade.

- Gertrude Jekyll

June is the best month to enjoy all this work done at our garden, all the roses (and there are a lot of roses at our garden) are in full bloom - every year again it's absolutely breathtaking and I feel so blessed for this chance in life to plan a garden by myself and to enjoy all its ups and downs. Our cottage garden is now 18 years old and looks exactly like in my dreams. And painting outside, inspired by all these lovely flowers around me is overwhelming and one of my favorite activities during these long days and lightful summer evenings.

June - the Strawberry Month

.

My Strawberry

O marvel, fruit of fruits, I pause
To reckon thee. I ask what cause
Set free so much of red from heats
At core of earth, and mixed such sweets

With sour and spice: what was that strength
Which out of darkness, length by length,
Spun all thy shining thread of vine,
Netting the fields in bond as thine.

I see thy tendrils drink by sips
From grass and clover's smiling lips;
I hear thy roots dig down for wells,
Tapping the meadow's hidden cells.

Whole generations of green things,
Descended from long lines of springs,
I see make room for thee to bide
A quiet comrade by their side;

I see the creeping peoples go
Mysterious journeys to and fro,
Treading to right and left of thee,
Doing thee homage wonderingly.

I see the wild bees as they fare,
Thy cups of honey drink, but spare.
I mark thee bathe and bathe again
In sweet unclaendared spring rain.

I watch how all May has of sun
Makes haste to have thy ripeness done,
While all her nights let dews escape
To set and cool thy perfect shape.

Ah, fruit of fruits, no more I pause
To dream and seek thy hidden laws!
I stretch my hand and dare to taste,
In instant of delicious waste

On single feast, all things that went
To make the empire thou hast spent

Helen Hunt

Each day eating fresh-picked strawberries is like living in heaven! I love June so very much, the garden is in full bloom, all roses are open. The scent is overwhelming and then the strawberries! We have a lot of strawberries farmers around us and so one MUST buy these delicious fruits.

There are so many receipts I had to try. This year I have done a strawberry tiramisu for the first time, with mascarpone, yogurt, biscuits marinated with Kirschwasser and strawberry sauce and pieces - unbelievable yummy!! And of course strawberry milkshake, and a cold yogurt-soup and homemade strawberry ice cream and and ...

Mein Norden - Das Reisen

My longing for the sea is immense, but this year it's a no-go for us. The impressions are a wonderful memory to the Island Juist, Northsea - Germany. It's a small lovely place without any cars, only horse-drawn carriage, endless beach, wide-open sky, and even in the high season space enough to breathe.
